The Hidden Network
Spawned by the Word, connected in Christ, made to fruit. Most of the life never shows. The mushroom is only the fruit.
You cannot fruit what was never spawned. You cannot spawn and skip the hidden work. You cannot bear lasting fruit alone.
The soil under our feet is not dead dust. It is living. Fungal mycelium—the vast, threadlike body of the fungus—often makes up most of the living microbial biomass in soil, commonly half to as much as nine-tenths of it. The mushroom we see is only the brief fruiting body. The real organism is the hidden network: hyphae woven through the earth, breaking down rock with acid and pressure, binding mineral grains, feeding roots, and helping turn stone into soil.
Trees look like the whole story. Their roots do split rock and hold the ground. But the greater labor is hidden. Without that unseen web, anything rooted starves.
Christ is the one who first makes life possible. No one fruits who was never given life in Him.
“Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”
John 12:24
Spawn is not the harvest. It is the beginning—new birth, the seed of the Word taking hold. Then comes the long, dark colonization: remaining in Jesus, the slow work no one applauds. The Spirit does what mycelium does in the soil. He moves beneath the surface. He holds the Body together. He carries what one root cannot reach. He turns hard ground into a place where life can stand. We may be rooted and growing, and still miss the greater thing: that lasting fruit is never a solo performance. It is union with Christ, and it is life shared in His people.
What is hidden is often what is most essential. The fruit is what the world sees. The network is what makes the fruit possible.
