Session 1 · Romans 1–5
God's righteousness for the ungodly who believe.
- Paul announces the gospel of God's Son and shows that idolatry has left the Gentile world without excuse under wrath.
- The same impartial judgment reaches the moral person and the Jew, and God praises a circumcision of the heart.
- Every mouth is stopped, and God shows His righteousness by justifying sinners through faith in Jesus, by His blood.
- Abraham was counted righteous by faith before he was circumcised, so the promise rests on grace and not on wage.
- Being justified by faith, we have peace with God, and grace reigns through Jesus Christ where death reigned through Adam.
Session 2 · Romans 6–10
Dead to sin, led by the Spirit, held by mercy.
- Baptized into Christ's death, believers must reckon themselves dead to sin and alive to God, no longer under grace as a license.
- Dying to the law that once bound them, they serve in the new way of the Spirit, and the holy law exposes the war within.
- There is now no condemnation in Christ, and the Spirit who raised Jesus gives life, adoption, and a hope creation itself groans for.
- Paul carries anguish for his kinsmen, and God's word has not failed, for mercy and hardening display the purpose of election.
- Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes, and whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Session 3 · Romans 11–15
Mercy keeps Israel. The body offers itself.
- A remnant remains by grace, Gentiles are grafted in by faith, and all Israel will be saved when the Deliverer comes from Zion.
- Paul urges a living sacrifice, sober use of gifts in one body, and a love that overcomes evil with good.
- Governing authorities are God's servants for order, love fulfills the law, and the day is near, so the church must put on Christ.
- The weak and the strong must not despise or judge one another, for each will stand before the Lord's own judgment seat.
- The strong bear the weaknesses of the weak, and Christ became a servant so that Jews and Gentiles would glorify God together.
Session 4 · Romans 16
Greet the saints. Guard the unity. Glory to God.
- Paul commends Phoebe, greets many saints by name, warns against those who cause divisions, and closes with glory to the only wise God.
