Session 1 · Hebrews 1–5
The Son is better. A priest who can sympathize.
- God has spoken by His Son, who is the radiance of God's glory and is greater than the angels who worship Him.
- The readers must not drift from so great a salvation, and Jesus was made lower than the angels so that He might taste death for everyone.
- Jesus is greater than Moses, and the Holy Spirit warns that a hardened heart will not enter God's rest.
- The promise of rest remains, the word of God is living and active, and we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens.
- A high priest is called by God, and Jesus learned obedience through suffering, though the readers have grown dull and need milk.
Session 2 · Hebrews 6–10
A better covenant. One sacrifice for sins.
- Leave elementary things and go on to maturity, for God swore His promise, and hope enters behind the curtain where Jesus has gone as forerunner.
- Melchizedek's priesthood is greater than Aaron's, and Jesus holds His priesthood permanently, able to save to the uttermost those who draw near.
- The point is this: we have such a high priest, and He mediates a better covenant, the new covenant promised in Jeremiah.
- Christ entered the holy places once for all by His own blood, and He appeared at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
- Sacrifices repeated yearly cannot perfect, but by a single offering Christ has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified, so do not throw away confidence.
Session 3 · Hebrews 11–13
Faith's cloud. An unshaken kingdom. Outside the camp.
- Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, and the elders from Abel onward lived by it, not having received the promise but greeting it from afar.
- A cloud of witnesses surrounds a race toward Jesus, and the readers have come not to Sinai's terror but to Mount Zion and to Jesus, the mediator.
- Let brotherly love continue, honor marriage, obey your leaders, and go to Jesus outside the camp, bearing His reproach, for we seek the city to come.
