Session 1 · Ezra 1–5
Cyrus opens the road, and the old men weep
- In his first year Cyrus proclaims that the Lord has charged him to build the house in Jerusalem, and he returns the vessels to Sheshbazzar.
- The families who return with Zerubbabel and Jeshua are listed, and those who cannot prove their descent are noted beside the freewill gifts.
- They build the altar before the temple, keep the Feast of Booths, and in the second year lay the foundation with tears and shouting mixed.
- Adversaries offer to help, are refused, and then frighten the builders, while later royal letters halt work in the city.
- Haggai and Zechariah prophesy, Zerubbabel and Jeshua resume, and Tattenai writes to Darius asking for the decree of Cyrus to be found.
Session 2 · Ezra 6–10
A decree in Ecbatana, a scribe who will not bluff
- Darius finds Cyrus's memorandum at Ecbatana, orders the temple finished from the royal treasury, and the house is dedicated in his sixth year with a Passover.
- Ezra, a priest and scribe, sets his heart to study the law, to do it, and to teach it, and Artaxerxes sends him with silver, authority, and a letter.
- At the river Ahava Ezra proclaims a fast instead of asking for soldiers, because he has already told the king that God's hand rests on those who seek Him.
- When he arrives he is told that priests and people have married into the abominations of the lands, and he prays a confession that owns the guilt.
- The assembly meets in heavy rain, and the people pledge to separate from those marriages as the law's demand in that fragile return.
