Session 1 · Amos 1–5
The lion roars, and justice must roll like water.
- Fire is decreed against Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, and Ammon for cruelty in war and for forgetting the covenant of brothers.
- Moab, Judah, and Israel are sentenced in turn, and Israel is charged with selling the righteous and trampling the poor.
- A lion's roar means prey is near, and the Lord GOD has spoken, so the prophet cannot keep silent while the city is exposed.
- The cows of Bashan crush the needy, and though God sent hunger, drought, and pestilence, the refrain says they did not return.
- Seek the LORD and live, hate the evil feasts he refuses, and let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like a stream.
Session 2 · Amos 6–9
Ease on ivory beds, then a booth of David raised.
- Woe is pronounced on those at ease in Zion and secure on Samaria's mountain, who dine and anoint themselves while Joseph's ruin is ignored.
- Locusts, fire, and a plumb line form visions of measured judgment, and Amaziah tells Amos to take his words back to Judah.
- A basket of summer fruit means the end has come, songs turn to wailing, and a famine of hearing the words of the LORD is sent.
- The Lord stands beside the altar, none escape his reach, and yet he pledges not to destroy utterly but to raise David's fallen booth.
